The sirens weren’t outside—they were in my chest, loud and relentless. When the police walked into the gym, every cruel joke and whisper about my face came rushing back. My thoughts spiraled as fear took over.
I was sure they were there for me. I believed Caleb had lied, that everything had been some elaborate setup. The humiliation I’d always feared felt moments away from becoming real again.
For years, I had been the punchline, the girl people stared at and talked about. Standing there, frozen, I braced myself for the worst, convinced history was repeating itself.
Then something shifted. One of the officers turned, and suddenly it wasn’t me they were focused on. The tension in my chest cracked with confusion.
They walked past me, crossing the gym floor toward Brittany. The same Brittany who had ruled these halls with confidence and cruelty now stood at the center of their attention.
Her power unraveled quickly. The smirk disappeared, replaced by panic. Her voice, once sharp with mockery, rose into desperate shrieks that echoed through the silent room.
The crowd that once followed her lead fell quiet. The same people who laughed at me now watched in stunned silence as everything she had built collapsed in front of them.
Later, when the flashing lights were gone and the music slowly returned, something inside me had changed. The room felt smaller, and for the first time, I didn’t.
My birthmark was still there, unchanged. But the story around it wasn’t. With Megan holding my hand and Caleb nearby, I walked out different—no longer defined by them, but finally choosing myself.
